Use of the tracheostoma valve in the marking of contrastive stress and sentence intonation.

چکیده
Two proficient tracheoesophageal speakers experienced in use of the tracheostoma valve (TSV) produced a total of 64 examples of "Bev loves Bob." These productions varied with location of contrastive stress, type of sentence intonation, and use of TSV. Thirty-four listeners judged the utterances in terms of stress placement and intonation contour simultaneously. An analysis of variance of the perceptual results indicated that TSV use reduced speaker ability to signal the two suprasegmental features; however, locus of the suprasegmental features, particularly stress placement, appeared to exert a stronger effect.

Prosodic marking of semantic contrasts
The present research investigates what drives the prosodic marking of contrastive information. For example, a typically-developing speaker of a Germanic language like Dutch generally refers to a pink car as a “PINK car” (accented words in capitals) when a previously mentioned car was red. The main question addressed in this chapter is whether contrastive intonation is produced with respect to t...
متن کاملThe prosody of contrastive topics in Southern Swedish
This paper presents a pilot study on the prosodic marking of a contrastive topic in Southern Swedish. A test sentence was elicited in three experimental conditions: initial focus; final focus; contrastive topic (initial word) plus focus (final word). F0 patterns were analysed in recordings of 10 speakers. A majority of the speakers distinguished clearly between the conditions, but speakers empl...

This study examined the impact of Clear Pronunciation 2 software on teaching English suprasegmental features, focusing on stress, rhythm and intonation. In particular, the software covers five topics in relation to suprasegmental features including consonant cluster, word stress, connected speech, sentence stress and intonation. Seven Iranian EFL learners participated in this study. The study l...
متن کاملProsody helps L1 speakers but confuses L2 learners: Influence of L+H* pitch accent on referential ambiguity resolution
Numerous studies have reported an effect of prosodic information on initial parsing decision. However, whether prosody functions in the same way in adult second language (L2) sentence processing is not known. In visual world eyetracking experiments, we investigated the influence of contrastive intonation and visual context on processing locally ambiguous sentences with L1 speakers (native Engli...
متن کاملOn the Independence of Mandarin Aspectual and Contrastive Sentence-Final ne
This paper argues for treating the Mandarin sentence-final particle ne as ambiguous between marking contrastive topic, in the sense of Büring 2003, and marking durative aspect. This account is novel is two ways. First, it rejects the widespread view that ne never marks aspect, representing a revival of Chan’s (1980) classic aspectual analysis. Second, while topic-marking ne is known to mark con...
